Terminology explained ⌄
Required — must be completed for this route.
Conditional — needed only for some routes, origins, or situations.
Not required — not normally needed for standard non-commercial travel or the selected route.
Non-commercial travel — When a pet travels with its owner, or within the allowed time window (usually up to 5 days before or after the owner travels). If the pet travels outside this window, or is transported without the owner, it is usually considered commercial movement, and different rules apply.
Microchip — A small electronic identification chip implanted under the pet’s skin. It must be ISO-compatible so it can be read internationally. The microchip number is used to link the pet to its vaccinations and travel documents.
Rabies vaccination — A rabies vaccination given after the microchip has been implanted. The vaccination must still be valid at the time of travel according to the destination country’s rules.
Rabies blood test (rabies titre test) — A laboratory test that measures rabies antibodies in the pet’s blood. Some countries require this test when pets travel from higher-risk rabies countries to confirm that the rabies vaccine is effective.
Pet travel document — An official document used in countries that do not issue pet passports. It records the pet’s identification (microchip), vaccinations (especially rabies), required treatments, and other information needed for international travel. It is usually issued by a veterinarian and/or approved by a government veterinary authority, and is often valid for one specific trip.
Pet passport — An official booklet used in certain regions (such as the European Union) that records the pet’s microchip details, rabies vaccination, and other required health information. It allows pets to travel more easily between participating countries and can usually be used for multiple trips while vaccinations remain valid.
Animal health certificate — An official certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian shortly before travel confirming that the pet has been examined and is clinically healthy and fit to travel. It may also confirm that required vaccinations and treatments are in place.
Import permit — An official approval issued by the government of the destination country allowing the pet to enter that country. Not all countries require an import permit, but when they do, it must usually be obtained before the pet travels.
Export permit — An official approval issued by the government of the departure country allowing the pet to leave that country. Not all countries require an export permit.
Quarantine — A period where a pet must stay in an approved facility or location after arrival to meet entry requirements.
Banned breed — A breed that is not allowed to enter or travel to certain countries under any circumstances.
Restricted breed — A breed that may be allowed to travel, but only if specific conditions or approvals are met.
