If Something Happens to You — Keep Your Pet Safe
Take care of your pet when something happens to you.
(This guidance does not provide human medical or first-aid advice.)
🐾 Your Pet Is With You
If you are being taken to hospital, evacuated, rescued or otherwise have to leave your pet, tell the people helping you that your pet is with you.
Find out whether your pet can stay with you. If they cannot, make sure you know who is taking them, where they will be taken and how to contact the person caring for them.
Tell them about any medication, medical conditions or important behavioural needs.
📍 Your Pet Is Somewhere Else
If you have been taken away or cannot return to your pet, tell someone immediately that your pet is alone and needs help.
Give them your pet’s exact location, how they can reach them and anything they need to know about immediate risks or essential care. Give them your contact details and get theirs.
Ask them to confirm when they have reached your pet and that your pet is safe.
❓ Helping Someone Who Cannot Respond
You are helping someone who is unconscious, unresponsive or otherwise unable to tell you about their pet.
Find out how to make sure a pet with them — or a pet that may be somewhere else — is not overlooked.
If something has happened to you:
● Tell someone you are travelling with a pet.
● Tell them exactly where your pet is.
● Make sure someone takes responsibility for your pet if you cannot continue caring for them.
● Tell them about any medication, medical conditions or other immediate needs.
● Get their contact details.
Give them the contact details of anyone you are travelling with who can help with your pet.
Travelling alone? Say so clearly. Tell them there is nobody else travelling with you who can take over your pet’s care.
If you are helping someone who cannot respond:
● Check whether a pet is with them or may be somewhere else.
● Make sure any pet with them is kept safe and accounted for.
● If a pet may be elsewhere, look for clearly identified pet emergency information.
● Establish whether anyone travelling with them can take responsibility for the pet.
Do not assume that because no pet is present, no pet is involved.
